Body
  • NW apple pricing continues to be on the stronger side, with a few deals out in the marketplace.
  • Quality has been mostly good on all the varieties.
  • We've seen some lower pricing on Red delicious, but there are some pressure issues on large reds, but it has been lot to lot.
  • There are a few deals on Braeburns, as shippers want to clean them up, before there are internal issues.
  • There are some import apples starting to arrive in the US.

Subject    5/19/2019 - - Onions
Body
  • Market is lower this week for the NW storage deal. Reds are available but in fewer hands. Whites finished in WA.

  • There will be limited amounts of Yellow and Red onions until mid to late June in WA. Quality remains good on Storage onions.

  • Southern Cal desert deal is in full swing and holding a strong market. Quality issues are causing some market fluctuations.

  • Be aware of the product you buy if you find prices cheaper than the rest of the gain..... possible seeders.

  • Otherwise, acres are down but there are good supplies and the yield halfway through the So Cal deal is good.

  • Rio Grande is producing all colors on firm prices and there are still onions trickling across from Mexico.

  • Look for steady to lower prices until the end of the deal in WA by the end of Winter over new crop should be available by late June.

Body
  • Overall market remains steady. However, Large Cartons have become a bit weaker on good supplies.  Consumers continue steady.
  • Small carton prices have increased in WA but decreased in Idaho as they run small profile Burbanks that produce more bales than large sized cartons.
  • 100 and 90ct sizes are a good value with ample supplies.
  • Consumer prices are steady to lower on good supplies and projected to stay that way for the foreseeable future.
  • Russet Organics are becoming tight and in fewer hands. Overall quality is excellent in all growing districts this season.

Body
  • Last week’s strange rain pattern should not affect the deal at all.
  • In fact, it could help spur on the growth of both bunched and crowns. Most shippers are expecting steady supplies and steady pricing for this week.
  • Quality is good to very good in both Santa Maria and Salinas.

Subject    5/19/2019 - - Iceberg Lettuce
Body
  • Unseasonable rain in the Salinas Valley this week have curtailed some harvesting schedules.

  • Not enough wet weather to completely stop harvesting.  It will just make for muddy boxes.

  • Adequate supplies going into next week should keep the market around current levels.

  • New Mexico continues to produce local iceberg lettuce at good quality and with cheaper freight rates it remains an option.

  • Next week starts the Memorial Day pull, but traditionally Iceberg Lettuce is not a big retail / foodservice item.

Subject    5/19/2019 - - Avocado
Body
  • Mexico's crossing/picking numbers are down and the market is reflecting this.

  • Demand continues strong with fruit peaking 48/40 and quality is good to excellent although starting to cross more and more of #2 fruit.

  • Expect the market to go up more over the next month. Calif is harvesting with size profile is 48/40's.

  • This fruit is hard green and be slow to turn due to lower oil content.

  • Please note that due to the great wet weather we have received you may see increase in lenticel damage for the next month.

  • This is a external issue only and won't effect the eating quality but it is making for higher numbers of #2 product.

  • Market wise Calif is following suit of Mexico with its pricing staying strong.

  • Calif won't hit it's volume stride until mid to late June.... as such we expect the market to keep moving up.

  • Supplies are cleaning up on the Red Seedless over the next week or so.

  • Green Seedless on the other hand are short in supply, market is on fire, and quality is just so.

  • If you want an issue you will find it in Green seedless.

  • Mexico is finally starting on green with very light numbers and expected to start crossing middle to end of the week on Red Seedless.

  • It will take a week to ten days to fill the supply line but once it does expect to see the market adjust.... Coachella is starting right on Mexico's heals.

  • Cool temps and weather have really slowed both these areas maturity.

Body
  • Cantaloupe supplies on the West coast doing well with good crossings from Mexico.  We are seeing mostly 9/12's.

  • Quality is good with color light tan side and eating well.   Calif desert has been looking to get started but cool weather.

  • Some shippers finally got in to pick last week and we are expecting more the end of this week.... so domestic program is getting going.

  • Look for fruit to be light numbers and big sizes for the next few weeks.

  • Honeydew supplies are plentiful with flat market with a run of size from Mexico. Overall quality is good with excellent sugar/flavor.

  • Older fruit (offshore) showing occasional sugar spots; this will all be cleaned up this week.   Look for desert to start harvesting the week of 5/27.

Body
  • Navel have good sugar and color.  Sizing 72/88 with small sizes to remain tight for the balance of the season.

  • Market on 56 and larger is on the soft side; firm on small fruit (if you can find it).

  • Due to all the weather on this fruit this season we are seeing increase in puff in the box as well as occasional fuzz balls at destination.

  • Fruit is also showing its age with packouts moving slower to get the grade correct.

  • As such it is taking product longer to load out as much of it is being packed day of shipment.

  • Valencia harvesting and packing.  This fruit is going heavy to export and small sizes to foodservice.

  • If you are in need of 113 and smaller fruit  this is the variety to be in.

  • Look for Valencia to increase in domestic volume by the end of the month.  Quality is good-- firm hard fruit, nice color, and good sugar levels.

  • Cara Cara oranges are peaking 88's wind down over the next 2-3 weeks.

  • Blood Oranges are packing 1/2 cartons and expected to finish up over the next two weeks.

Body
    • California fruit tree is now going with good color and fair sugar/flavor to start out.  Cool wet weather last week and this has slowed harvest.
    • Peaches going with fruit peaking on 60/70's although some larger fruit is packing.
    • Color is good and demand is high with shipper selling out fast due to light supplies.
    • Available in White flesh and Yellow varieties.  Recent rains have caused some staining on the early fruit.
    • Nectarines much the same as the Peaches.  Demand strong.  Seeing great color with occasional scarring.
    • Should have both Yellow and White flesh available this week.
    • Cherries were packing Brooks, Corals and Tulare varieties.  Though the crop is big.... weather is causing major quality issue for the growers.
    • With more rain expected this week we will have more issues.
    • Apriums did start packed mostly in 2-3 layers.
    • Apricots going with fairly good sizing and color; supplies light and flavor fair.
    • Give this item another 10 days and you should see some good eating.
    • Plums fruit set appears to be very good at this time we will see some scaring (more packed to utility grade possibly) due to winds and weather.
    • Was expecting to see Plums around 5/22 but cool temps are expecting to push this off by possibly a week.
    • We have supplies and various packs of Arils (Pomegranate seeds) now packing from Peru with Chilean fruit next week.
    • We can offer a variety of pack sizes packed to order.
    • Asian Pears are available in single layer packs from Chile; call for varieties and sizing.
