Subject    7/20/2017 - - Apples
Body
  • Overall movement on apples continues to be steady as we move closer to the end of the season. Condition on the fruit has been good.
  • Some of the Jonagold, Braeburn, & Honeycrisp crops have finished. There are some import New Zealand Honeycrisp & Braeburn shipping.
  • All sizes of Granny Smith have become somewhat tight. There are very few lower grades available. Pricing remains high.
  • Gold Delicious aren't as tight as the Granny Smith, but they are getting good money too.
  • Reds & Golds movement is very good; going to export markets. We should see our 1st new crop approx. Aug 6th with Gingergolds.

Subject    7/20/2017 - - Onions
Body
  • Bit of a GAP in supplies for California & New Mexico, WA and OR.  Supplies are TIGHT - Demand is high, stay on top of orders with advanced notice.
  • Overwinters are about done in the south transitioning to transplants and direct seed.  Demand is UP from Mexico putting pressure on prices.
  • The NW is experiencing growing pains as well.  Many of the Overwinter onions have "bolted" - basically trying to go to seed; making quality marginal.
  • Transplants are a week or so away.  There are a few early fields of Direct seed that will be harvested this week.
  • Prices and availability are volatile during this transition. Supply lines should stabilize in all districts over the next 2 weeks.
  • Walla-Walla sweets are in good supply price has come off a bit. ORGANIC onions available in SO CA.

Subject    7/20/2017 - - Potatoes
Body
  • Large spuds are still increasing in price and demand.   Which is pushing supply and there are no other major growing areas to turn to until New crop.
  • Bale supplies remain plentiful with steady priced.   Small sizes are ideal to promote.
  • There may be the occasional deal on a load of 100's if you ask around. Expect quality potatoes to be available all season from the NW.
  • New Crop Russets in the Northwest growing areas, previously thought to be delayed, are looking more like they will be on track.
  • Some growers are saying the plants have caught up in a few areas.  Expect New crop availability by as early as last week in July.
  • All this sunshine and good living is paying off for the spud growers. There will be an overlap of storage into New Crop.
  • Organic Russets should be available by mid August.

Subject    7/20/2017 - - Oranges
Body
  • Valencia packing has slowed and supplies are very limited.  Supplies are heavy to 72/88/113 and mostly fancy; choice fruit is almost nonexistent.
  • What fruit is out there will see some occasional softness and greening at the stem end due to the excessive heat.
  • Be patient and order early, as some orders may go unfilled.   This market will continue to advance. Sugar is good; color is showing re-greening already.
  • Off Shore navels are now available out of Chile and Australia.  Keep in mind these are 15KG packs (approx. 33 lbs).
  • The fruit is fancy grade and mostly 88's and larger packs.
  • Be sure to have your TRUCKS check in early... those not loading on original day or order is becoming an issue.
  • Supplies being so tight it is imperative that orders are picked up timely. Fruit tends to disappear if left on the floor.

Subject    7/20/2017 - - Stone Fruit
Body
  • California tree fruit markets are starting to show some movement.
  • Peaches peaking 44/48/56's and the color is very nice.   Market remains high as supplies can't keep up with demand.
  • Calif crop is not over abundant this year. East coast supplies were damaged with weather this year so this is the main supplier currently to the country.
  • Nectarines are following Peaches with supplies being very tight and demand heavy.  Color/flavor are good.
  • Packing mostly Tray pack and peaking 48/56/44. We could see some tightening here in the next 7-10 days.
  • Red and Black Plum varieties supplies are improving with 40's and larger still on the tight side.
  • Fruit is looking very nice and eating well.  We should see lots of varieties kicking in by middle of the month... Think Plum - o - Rama!
  • Pluots volume good.  Sizes similar to Plums.... nice color and eating well. Call for supplies.

Subject    7/20/2017 - - Lemons
Body
  • All sizes and grades are tight.  Market is still up and it isn't slowing demand all fruit from District 2 is only domestic supply at this time.
  • Demand out pacing harvests (labor now being an issuel).   Overall, the fruit is packing clean with occasional scars.
  • Even with offshore supplies the market continues to be short on large sizes as well as mid-sized choice and standard grade.
  • Advanced booking and flexibility will go a long way to filling orders and pro-rations are likely.
  • Offshore fruit is finally here with fair supplies and most fruit is Fancy.
  • Although this should help the supply category not see a lot of change in the market.
  • Expect the import numbers to pick up speed towards the end of the week... this fruit will be followed by Mexican supplies that will go heavy to the east.
  • TRUCKS not loading on the day fruit is becoming an issue. Supplies are so tight it is imperative that trucks load the day ordered and CALL the sheds.
  • Fruit tends to disappear if it left on the floor.
