Subject    1/22/2020 - - Onions
Body
  • It was almost preordained that the onion market would take off after the first of the year; prices are up and rising right on cue.

  • Supply is just keeping up with demand.  The biggest push is on Jumbo Yellow but the pressure seems to be on all colors at this time.

  • Speaking of supply, if the current rate of disappearance continues supplies will be very tight before the end of the storage onion season.

  • Rumors of poor quality on arrival are emanating from Idaho supplies, which in turn is adding to the overall pressure on national supplies.

  • WA and Idaho Yellow Sweets are available.  Organic red, yellows, Whites and sweets are available as well. Quality and condition is good..

Subject    1/22/2020 - - Potatoes
Body
  • Large carton prices are up again as demand from export as well as across the US increases.
  • Potato packers from other states are trying to buy large size potatoes from WA..... that's how short this deal is folks.
  • Light volume on large cartons in Idaho is prompting  buyers to pull from districts they do not normally pull from.
  • This in turn is raising prices and rightfully so.   This season's shortage has become apparent to everyone!
  • Small size cartons and consumer size potatoes are in good supply with steady pricing. Quality and condition remain good in the NW.

  • Plenty of BLUEBERRIES are readily available as Chile and Peru reach peak production with ships arriving daily.
  • RASPBERRIES/BLACKBERRIES will continue to be in limiting supplies, with Raspberries reaching demand exceeds availability.
  • Both will see better numbers next week-weather permitting.

    Subject    1/22/2020 - - Iceberg Lettuce
    Body
    • Cooler than normal temperatures in the desert is creating problems with the ICEBERG lettuce.
    • The cold temps are hindering growth, forcing growers to harvest lite weight product with a puffy solidity.
    • Also with cold temps we are experiencing ice in the fields.
    • This promotes blistering and epidermal peeling causing discoloration and poor appearance.
    • The 10 day forecast continues with cool temps in the day and cold to freezing temps in the night, we do not see this market going down anytime soon.
