Subject    3/19/2019 - - Onions
Body
  • Onions will be in a Bull Market for remainder of 2019 storage crop and into the summer deal.

  • A perfect storm of short storage supplies, fewer acres planted and adverse weather conditions are coming together to create this scenario.

  • The short version; the onion market will most likely remain volatile and continue to gain strength.

  • Onions will be in tight supply for the remainder of the storage season.

  • Expect price hikes throughout the coming spring and into the Brawley deal and plan to plan ahead.

  • Relief will most likely not be seen until the volume of new crop is realized from the Bakersfield growing areas in early June.

  • Then the NW in mid-July will kick in with better supplies if planting goes well this spring.

  • Mexico has not been crossing normal volumes due to early season rain causing quality issues along with reduces yields.

  • In fact they are absorbing most of what they are growing while continuing to purchase from the NW growing districts further depleting storage supplies.

  • Texas planted far less acres this season.

  • Brawley district overplanted last season which resulted is huge losses due to oversupply and low returns in 2018.

  • Consequently, Brawley growers planted much less this season as well.

  • The North West remains blanketed in Snow and freezing temperatures which is delaying the spring planting considerably.

  • Look for the Northwest New crop production to be delayed a minimum of 2 to 3 weeks into the 2019/2020 crop.

Subject    3/19/2019 - - Potatoes
Body
  • Carton Russets prices remains strong. Price continues to increase especially on large sizes.
  • DEMAND is good from both domestic and export movement.
  • Given the short supply projection for the 2018/2019 crop, look for all cartons to remain strong and possibly increase in price over the next few months.
  • The 100 and 90ct sizes that have been flat for most of the season are beginning to rise in prices no as well.
  • Consumer size Russets are steady on good supplies and projected to stay that way for the foreseeable future.
  • Idaho-it's that time of year when Norkotah supplies are starting to shrink & prices are higher because of that and increased demand.
  • Burbanks tend towards smaller profiles and consumer packs with higher priced large cartons. Reports of internal bruising in Idaho.
  • Russet ORGANICs are available in most districts. Overall quality is excellent in all growing districts this season.
  • LATE PLANTING; there remains copious amounts of snow with cool temperatures in WA & OR preventing growers from getting into the fields.
  • Look for later than normal harvest next fall.  A delay of 1 to 3 weeks may not be out of the question.  .

Body
  • Mexico's Avocado crossings are down slightly.  As such (and as normal for this time of year) the markets are starting to increase.
  • Most of the increases are being seen on the ends of sizing (60/70/84/32/36's)  Demand still continues good.

  • Calif is starting to (or at least between rains) harvest some of its early fruit this month.  Sizing profile will be predominantly 48/60's to start.
  • This fruit will be hard green and be very slow to turn due to lower oil content.
  • Please note that due to the great wet weather. We have received you may see increase in lenticel damage for the next month or so.
  • This is a external issue only and won't effect the eating quality.

Subject    3/19/2019 - - Oranges
Body
  • The anticipated dry weather did materialize in central Calif last week... this gave field time to suck up the moisture and dry out a bit.
  • Weather man is currently predicting scattered showers for this week which will slow harvest again.
  • (Good news last week we had strong picking so should not see a slow on supplies available to pack and ship).
  • Navels continue with good sugar and color with fruit packing heavy to fancy but more choice is starting to show up due to weather.
  • Size is 72 & smaller.
  • There are a few larger lots starting to show up but demand is keeping those floor counts clean.
  • Demand for large fruit continues good and those are the only sizes demanding strong money.
  • Quality is general is good but we are seeing the occasional fuzz ball show up on receiving.
  • This is due in part to all the rains the fruit has seen.  Market in general is low.
  • Cara Cara oranges are peaking 113/138/88's similar to Navels. This variety is looking very nice and eating well this year.
  • Packing mostly in 1/2 cartons but full cartons are available on request.  Market here remains strong due to limited supplies.
  • Blood Oranges are packing up in 1/2 cartons. Exterior color looking nice with deep interior color.
  • Like all Orange varieties they are small 113/138/88.
