  • Large counts are projected to be sold at a premium for the season.  This is true across North America including the Canadian providences.

Subject    9/19/2019 - - Berries
Body
  • An expected warm-up at the end of last week has shippers watching yields.
  • The Watsonville/Salinas volume is expected to increase a little, but everything depends on how the short heat event will affect the berries.
  • The Santa Maria deal continues to ramp up, helping pick up the slack.
  • Quality remains generally good, but we are bound to see some quality issues depending on the length and intensity of this heat wave.
  • Salinas/Watsonville growers continue to provide "good" not great numbers of fruit.  The recent cooler nights have helped the fruits overall quality.
  • Santa Maria harvest is increasing volume each day.   Pricing, while we noticed a slight increase this week, should hold steady into next week.
  • Adequate supplies of the Raspberries, Blackberries and Blueberries will keep current markets steady.

    • Supplies of LEAF and ROMAINE have stayed steady over the last few weeks and should remain that way for this week as well.

    Body
    • Mexico numbers are holding their own and market is right there with them.

    • Fruit is peaking in the mid sizes 48/40/60's with larger and small fruit on the light side and getting stronger money.

    • Recent rains in the growing areas have slowed harvest.  This is impacting the dry matter test and exterior skin conditions.

    • Mexico is in the drivers seat as far as markets go.  At this time expect to have to have fairly decent supplies of 48's crossing.

    • Shippers are still trying to get a handle on MX crop for the balance of the year.   #2 fruit is in strong demand at this time.
