NORTHWEST
Aug 27, 2010

ONIONS- GOOD START on the new crop Yellow, Red and White onions.  Certified Washington Sweets are also available. The market seems to be settling down and finding stable prices.  Export demand is helping to keep market fairly steady at this time.  All colors are available with good skin set and getting better every day.

POTATOES-Northwest

Russets: The New Crop Russet Norkotahs are peaking in the mid sizes such as 80’s.  Mexico is taking a bit of product which could put some pressure on the small carton sizes.  The large sizes are projected to stay firm as they are slightly tight.  The overall market has adjusted slightly but should begin to stabilize within the next week or two.  Most sheds are up and running with good supplies across the board. There are deals on small cartons and bales-just ask.   Idaho is still shipping storage crop Burbanks and Norkotahs and may do so for another month. There are mixed reviews on quality on the old crop; use your QA people if can.  New Crop Norkotahs are available now with Burbank availability possibly in late September.

Colored Potatoes: Eastern WA- New crop reds and yellow are in good supply. Color is fair on the reds and very nice on the yellows. Good demand on the small sizes. The Mt Vernon district new crop will begin at the end of this month with more volume in September.  All colors are available in California.  Red are very tight with a firm price. The market in general is steady overall.  Quality is good.

Plenty of CELERY to go around-lots of excellent fresh packed SNOBOY. Birddog seeing a lot of celery in the cold boxes with quite a bit of age on it! Order Snoboy- packed fresh for your order.

Weather is still causing STRAWBERRY problems, 3 days of extreme heat then back to fog and below normal temps. Berries are stressed, quality is fair. Do not expect fruit to hold too long, lots of bruising and soft fruit. Please let your customers know quality is iffy.

The BROCCOLI market is on the upswing as most shippers have fought their way thru the last few weeks’ heavy supplies. As last week ended, both bunched and crowns began inching up… we expect this trend to continue. Lighter supplies should be the norm for the next few weeks. BROCCOLI quality seems to be OK in spite of last week’s mini-heat wave, however our birddog is keeping his eyes on it.

Lettuce market was steady on Lettuce last week. Although a few shippers reported very light supplies, it didn’t seem to make much of a difference. Demand is not good by any means. This week, a cool weather pattern is supposed to set in. This will slow everything down and maybe make for some excitement. Quality is fair.  LEAF Lettuce market is slowly coming off and the quality has been pretty good with some light quality issues. Look for market to continue to fall. Demand has been light.

Cauliflower market is struggling.  Quality has been good with moderate demand.  Look for the market to remain steady through the week.

They eat great!

Hass Avocados demand has been good with the market up.

-Mexico- Just getting done with the old crop, transitioning into the new crop (crazy flower).  The new crop is very inconsistent in its ripening hence the name. Mexico’s projected time to be done with the new crop is 4 weeks from now, then they start the 4th and last bloom called the “Aventajada” which ripens and matures very well, this bloom will take us into the beginning of 2011.

-California- pricing is up due to the decrease in harvesting and increase on Labor Day Ads.  California avocados have a very high maturity due to their rich oil content this time of the season, production wise growers down south are starting to finish, in the North growers are reaching their peak season.  California this year under performed as far as volume we thought the crop was going to bring, I wouldn’t be surprised California to stay in the game very late this year due to growers holding back for more money….. stay tuned!

-Chilean- expected to start on the west coast the beginning of October; rumors are that there is already Chilean fruit on the East Coast. Chilean this year is going to be very interesting, with the cold temperatures they have had the past months volume is projected to be anywhere from 25-35% percent lighter than last years.

Lemon market is in its normal up swing and will stay strong till new crop starts in late Sept.  Overall supplies are just fair.  Small fruit (165/200’s) continues light, with good demand.  Packouts continue heavy 115/ 140’s size.  Quality is looking good.  Product is loading Central Valley & Ventura areas. Chilean imports have started & will help slightly to fill the supply needs.  T8/2he Chilean market looks to be based off the domestic market.

Valencias look good & are eating great!  Fruit is peaking 88/72.  SNOBOY oranges are available loading in both a Fancy & Choice.  Market overall is reasonably steady.  Chilean NAVELS are HERE!!  Great for retail ads, contact your sales representative in Fresno for prices & loading SNOBOY from Chile.

Limes are coming from Mexico loading in Texas as well as consolidation in Calif.  Market is up especially on the small sizes 150-235.  The sizing of the fruit is shifting to a larger profile 110-150’s.  Harvest & crossing of product has been slowed by rains in the growing area.  Demand remains good.  We have various pack styles available and consolidation is available, call Fresno.

GREEN BEANS- Orange County has limited supplies but they will be increasing along with Fresno over the next 10-14 days. Santa Maria will also have good steady production with new fields coming on. Brentwood/Watsonville have started to harvest again with increasing supplies for the next 2-3 weeks. Eastern Washington will have supply for 7-10 days as they finish their final blocks.

ROMA TOMATOES- Volumes have started to decrease as the season starts to wind down for the Mexican regions. Baja’s new fields have come available with supplies steady and most the fruit is mid size. Northern Cal. will continue to increase volume as most growers are now packing. They will hit peak production by the second week of September. Oxnard/Oceanside have been slowed by cooler weather but supplies will be normal by early September.

“GAS GREEN” 25# TOMATO- Central California is going and supplies will increase as we continue into the month. Supply will hit peak production by mid September.

VINE RIPES, GRAPE TOM- Baja is in production with just a few growers going and product is limited. Look for a slow steady increase in production out of the Oxnard/Oceanside area through August. Grape tomatoes out of Baja are steady in limited supply over the next 10-14 days. California/Oxnard weather has heated up and volumes have jumped.

HH BEEF, TOMATOES ON THE VINE- Oxnard remains steady in production with good supplies of mostly large sizes. Western Canada will continue with just average steady volume. Both Eastern & Western Canada will begin their seasonal decline. TOV’s—Oxnard has production currently along with Texas, Arizona & Colorado. These areas will continue with fair/good supplies through the month. Canada has begun their seasonal decline.

Cantaloupe/Honeydew- Westside deal is in a gap situation with most growers going into new blocks next week. Honeydew domestic volume is the same as cantaloupe….large sizes and lots of them. The next 2 weeks will be a good opportunity to promote large fruit.
